Telford & Wrekin Council has thanked residents, partners and community organisations for their support after learning that Telford has not been shortlisted for the UK Town of Culture 2028 competition.
Although it has been revealed no town in the West Midlands will progress to the next stage of the process, council leaders in Telford say the bid has successfully highlighted the Boroughโs unique story and strengthened plans already underway to celebrate the townโs 60th anniversary in 2028.
The expression of interest brought together communities, cultural organisations, artists, businesses, education providers and local partners to showcase Telfordโs heritage, creativity and ambition for the future.
Work will continue on developing the Boroughโs cultural offer, building on investment in cultural infrastructure, community events and the emerging Cultural Strategy, while preparations for a programme of events to mark Telfordโs 60th anniversary remain firmly on track.
The Town of Culture bid forms part of wider plans to mark 60 years since Telford was designated a New Town in 1968. The anniversary will provide an opportunity to celebrate the boroughโs achievements, recognise the communities that have shaped its success and inspire the next chapter of Telfordโs story.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: โWhile we are naturally disappointed not to have been shortlisted for Town of Culture 2028, we remain immensely proud of the bid and the way communities across Telford and Wrekin came together to support it.
โThe process provided an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, showcase our heritage and demonstrate the ambition that continues to drive our Borough forward.
โThe work that informed our bid will continue to shape our cultural ambitions and our plans for celebrating Telfordโs 60th anniversary in 2028.โ
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure, said: โOur ambition to celebrate Telfordโs story doesnโt change because of this result. The process has helped us shine a light on the people, places and organisations that make our Borough special, and many of the ideas that emerged through the bid will continue to influence our plans for 2028.
