As England’s leading first aid charity, its purpose is to put the power of first aid into everybody’s hands so that every person, in every place, is closer to help when it matters most.
Last year alone, St John Ambulance taught 180,381 people lifesaving skills and provided 458,000 volunteer hours, supporting 29,735 patients at events across the country.
Hugh Strickland, County President for Shropshire, shared how his recent first aid training through St John Ambulance helped him recognise the signs of a heart attack and act quickly. In November, he experienced sudden, severe symptoms, but thanks to his training, he immediately recognised the classic warning signs and knew to take aspirin while waiting for emergency help. A stent was fitted shortly afterwards, and he has since made a full recovery.
Reflecting on his experience, Hugh said
We do this first aid training often thinking we can help others - and that is important - but it might just save your own life too.
St John Ambulance continues to expand its reach through community initiatives, youth programmes, workplace training, and partnerships that help create more lifesaving communities across England. The charity encourages everyone to learn essential first aid skills, from recognising cardiac symptoms to responding effectively in emergencies, because building this confidence can save lives, including your own.
